
2 Day White Patch - Camping at Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary @ Calga

Jake Cassar has been described as an encyclopedia of bush knowledge, earning this reputation by spending extended periods living in the wild subsisting on only what he can obtain from the land.
An award winning conservationist and youth mentor, Jake's truly comprehensive knowledge of edible and medicinal wild plants, and his personal stories from decades of experience, are guaranteed to keep the students engaged and change the way they look at the Aussie bush forever!
Jake has been running excursions, incursions and school camps for around 20 years, and truly has mastered the art of storytelling and ensuring that the students all receive a great learning experience.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
Over this relaxed, fun and inclusive 2 day course, students will learn fundamental survival skills with a strong emphasis on staying safe in the bush.

COURSE CONTENT

Build confidence in regard to identifying a variety of edible and medicinal native and introduced plants

Learn about poisonous plants and fungi

Learn all about the amazing wildlife on the 80 acre wildlife sanctuary

Learn fundamental survival skills such as

making friction fire,

building a weatherproof shelter,

making cordage from natural fibres, and

finding fresh water and nutritious wild food in some truly unexpected places

Establish and maintain a mutually beneficial relationship with the land and all its inhabitants

Learn about safe, sustainable and respectful foraging

Enjoy Jake's campfire stories, music and bushcraft related discussions

Learn the fundamentals of tracking including animal track and scat ID, bird language and much, much more!

Logistics
Arrive: 9.45am on the day of the course for a 10am start.
Finish: Approx 4pm the following day (negotiable)
Cost: $200 per student, with a minimum of 15 students, maximum of 25 students.
CAMPING OPTIONS
Self Sufficient Camping: While you are welcome to bring your own tent, we now have 12 family size canvas tents already set up and free of charge! They've even got camp mattresses in them. Just bring your sleeping bag/s and pillow and you're good to go. You can check out what they look like here - cost is included in your course ticket
Cabin Stay: Alternatively you can stay in fully self sufficient cabins (for a fee) by booking online or contacting the Walkabout Park directly on 4375 1100.
The Walkabout Park has toilets, hot showers, electricity (power points) and even a couple of fridge/freezers!
TO BRING

NOTEBOOK & PENS! Even if you aren't a big note taker, including teachers, there will likely be something you WILL want to write down - esp re Jake's encyclopedic plant knowledge.

Phone/camera (teachers only unless students have permission)

Phone charger - there're power points in the campsite.
Wear: Warm / cool layers, hiking boots (optional), sun hat, sunscreen, raincoat. Bring spare socks.
Food: Please ensure you bring enough food and snacks for the entire duration of the weekend. Recommended: Fruit, nuts, muesli bars, canned foods, noodles (easy stuff) and/or pre prepped healthy meals in containers that can be kept in the camp refrigerator. Please also ensure students bring a water bottle.
